There have been lots of imitators, but many consider Haribo Gold-Bears the gold standard of gummies, with fresher flavors and a slightly more resistant texture than its competitors. Until 1982, they were only sold in Europe, and many American fans had to befriend an international traveler in order to get their Haribo Gold-Bear fix. The Haribo company started making gummi dancing bears back in the 1920s.
Hans Riegel began making candy in his kitchen before starting Haribo, which is named for himself and his home town: HA for Hans, RI for Riegel and BO for Bonn, Germany.
These little bears are about 3/4″ tall and come in five flavors: Raspberry (red bear), Orange (orange bear), Lemon (yellow bear), Pineapple (clear bear) and Strawberry (green bear).
